Nichicon Battery - Nexperia Cooperation

Small LTO Battery Leader and Semiconductor Expert Provide Sustainable Energy Harvesting Solution for Small IoT Devices

Nijmegen, Netherlands. and Schaumburg, IL. USA – June. xx, 2024 – Nexperia and Nichicon Corporation, a leading electronic components supplier, have announced a strategic partnership to provide customers with an energy harvesting solution for small form factor IoT devices. Combining Nichicon’s Small Lithium Titanate Rechargeable Battery (SLB) technology with Nexperia’s NEH2000BY energy harvesting PMIC provides developers with a complete solution that is easy to integrate into space-constrained applications, such as IoT sensors.

Nexperia energy harvesting solutions power devices by using energy already available at its location. Its energy harvesting portfolio consists of Power Management ICs dedicated to extract the maximum power of harvester such as PVs, TEGs and piezo elements, and inject this energy into electronic systems for extended battery life. The first product of this range, from the acquisition of Nowi B.V., is the NEH2000BY, a cost-efficient PMIC dedicated to light Energy Harvesting – either indoor or outdoor light.

“We see great synergies between Nichicon’s rechargeable batteries and Nexperia energy harvesting products. This new reference design will enable easier integration of energy harvesting in space-constrained applications”, adds Chris Juliano, Head of Marketing for Energy Harvesting at Nexperia. “It’s only the beginning of our partnership with Nichicon – we plan to release more demonstrators, including our newest products, later this year.”

“Nichicon is deeply committed to reducing the tech industry’s impact on the environment, including the growing problem of battery waste,” said Craig Anderson, President of Nichicon America. “Our partnership with Nexperia marks another milestone in creating a more sustainable IoT for generations to come.”

SLB rechargeable batteries support a high number of charge and discharge cycles (~25K cycles), low-temperature operation, and superior power density when compared with typical rechargeable batteries. They can be easily charged from various energy harvesting sources, making them well suited to consumer, commercial, and industrial IoT applications. Additionally, by utilizing Lithium Titanium Oxide, SLB devices have superior safety characteristics including the ability to resist combustion from punctures and other forms of damage.

Nexperia NEH2000BY energy harvesting PMIC is only 3×3 millimeters. Its unique design, without any inductor, requires limited external components to function, hence reducing the board real estate. And it has an embedded Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) algorithm which checks the available power collected by the photovoltaic panel (PV) and adjusts its internal impedance every second. No preprogramming is needed from the device designer, with the chip self-optimizing the harvested energy. This makes Nexperia’s chip as easy to use as possible and to facilitate the integration of energy harvesting in space-constrained applications, such as IoT sensors.

Nichicon and Nexperia’s joint sustainable IoT demonstrator will be showcased at Sensors Converge -the event for sensing, processing and connectivity- taking place on 24-26 June 2024 in Santa Clara, California at booth 416.
